Want to hear something surprising? It's 11 p.m. and I only just realized that TODAY is my sixth bandiversary. I knew it was coming, and it's been on my radar through the fall, but I hadn't realized that today is The Day until just a few minutes ago.
Are you wondering whether I've gotten so used to my band that I just forgot about it? That's not the case at all. I still have to eat carefully and take care not to get stuck. I still get on the scale nearly every day to take stock of how I'm doing. And, I still work out -- it's actually become a part of my life -- something I did not know would be possible to achieve.
I think about my band one way or another every day, at least a few times. Sometimes it's to realize that I shouldn't eat too close to bed time because that gives me reflux. Other times, it's to think that I should be careful about what I order at a restaurant so that I don't get stuck. More often, it's to be grateful that I've gone from associating guilt and self-loathing with food and how I feel about my body to feeling happy about my appearance and to really enjoying cooking and eating much more than I ever did before.
I am grateful. So, so, so grateful. That is a consistent theme in my blog, and that is because it is a consistent theme and feeling in my life. I am happy much more often than not. I have a wonderful husband who is the warmest and nicest person I've ever met, and I feel so lucky to have done so much work on myself before I met him that I was ready for this relationship when the time came. And, as if that wasn't enough already, I just moved to a new job that is a step up in every way meaningful to me. I am grateful, and I am psyched to see what the future holds. (Don't get me wrong -- my life isn't perfect, and I don't want to give you the impression that it's all smooth sailing for me. Among other things, I've had some very scary family health issues this year, and have had arguably more than my fair share of stressful things to deal with on many fronts.)
Is a band a magic wand? Well, no. But, as I've said before, if the main thing bothering you in your life is your weight and relationship with food ... and you're willing to do the work, it can feel like one. This has felt like a miracle to me. I can't understate how grateful I feel to have been able to use this tool and for all the support, friendship and love I've found both through this blog and in my day-to-day life. Sending all those good feelings back out into the universe, and to each of you reading this post.

Congratulations.....we are sooooooo fortunate! Aren't we?
XO
Very well said Catherine. As you may remember, we almost share a bandiversary -- mine's on October 24th. Like you, I think of my band every day and am grateful. I still exercise 3-4 times per week and have to be mindful of what I eat and how fast I eat it. I just had a complete physical from my doctor(s) and I'm doing great! I'm a "regular" person and can shop for regular clothes is regular shops. I'm more than grateful for this tool that I was given. Thanks for your words!
I love to see your posts and am glad to be connected in other ways too.
You are a band 'leader'- I'm happy life has turned out so sweet in many ways for you…
Sorry to hear of any struggles of daily life, but as we all know- that is life and I'm just so happy for you!!
Super congrats. Great job and great inspiration.
Love. Love. Love this post!

Awww... so HAPPY to see a post!!! (I know, I can't comment on my posting!)... and so excited for your new position, and exciting things! Congrats. You (we!) have done well. I look forward to a visit back to NYC and to have the opportunity to see you and Jen! :-)
Happy Bandiversary a little late! I feel exactly the same as you....grateful everyday for my band! And, I think of my band every day as well.....!

Onward!

Catherine, just have to ask -- I was in NY last week and had dinner at the Monkey Bar. By any chance were you there? I saw someone who looked just like you but I didn't want to interrupt your dinner. It was Thursday, Nov 6th.
Yes -- Louie! That was me! I can't believe that I missed getting to say hi in person. My friend who I was with is actually someone who knows about the band and my blog. Sorry that I didn't get to connect with you while we were in the same spot!
I just found your blog looking through other band-blogs. I'm scheduled for my band on 12/11/2014. I'm getting excited but I'm a little nervous too. I'm 54 yo and I hope I haven't done this too late. Like some of the comments...I want to be normal...I want to look normal...I want to wear normal clothes. I'm ready to use this as a tool to help me make better food choices.
Catherine, I can't believe it WAS you!!!! My husband and I were in the next booth. I told him about you and he said, "go say hi." But you were with someone and I didn't know how to explain myself. You are just as beautiful in person as you are in your blog! Happy Thanksgiving! That's what I remember from your first posts - those HUGE rutabagas! I promise that if I get back to NY, I'll get in touch first! XO
Haha!! Yes -- the rutabegas!! A huge family tradition of mine!
How crazy is that that we were just a table away! I wonder what story you could have made up in case my friend didn't know about the blog. I guess you could have said that you'd read some articles that I've written on-line or something like that. Hmmm!! I'm sorry I didn't get to meet you in person! Next time!
