I've been MIA this past week because I was in Florida, visiting my mom for Thanksgiving! We had a great time, and the warm weather was such a nice break from the cold here in NYC. It was fun to break out a few summer clothing favorites, and I even made it to the pool twice to catch some sun.

"Sword" fish. . .
In other news, I have a bit of an update on the PP spotting. I found out later that he had gotten married at a small family-only event in Texas a few weeks before I saw him. And that we ran into each other just a few hours before his NYC reception. How weird is that? The funny thing is that his friend Wendy seemed noticeably uncomfortable when we met. . I guess now I have a better appreciation for why!
I also had the annoying situation of having my friend Erica tell me (when I asked) about the Texas ceremony, but she totally failed to mention that she had been at his reception the very night before we talked. That's especially weird, since she went out of her way to tell me that none of his friends went to the wedding -- as though I would be glad about that, somehow? Of course they didn't go . . it was a family-only event and they were all at the party here in town!
Erica told me that she didn't mention the wedding earlier because she didn't want me to have it on my mind around my birthday. I can understand that, but I still don't see why she wouldn't have just told me about the reception too -- it's been two years since we broke up, I knew PP was engaged, and I certainly would never begrudge him celebrating with his friends. I mean. . I'm not going to send a gift or anything, but it's not as though I hate him and don't want him to have any friends!
Black Friday lunch break with mom. . had to break up all this text with a photo!
It was also a little weird to (ahem. . cyberstalk and find photos of the wedding and reception and) see Erica, Adam, Jessica, Chris, Lauren and Randy there. After all, I'd been out on Shelter Island staying with the first four, and the latter two joined us for brunch one day. No one mentioned a word about Brian's wedding (which had just happened) or the upcoming reception, even though they were all about to attend it. It felt so strange to find the photos and see them all there.
I feel like they must have had a discussion among themselves and decided not to mention it to me, which feels really weird to me -- particularly where Erica is involved, since she's supposed to be my friend (I"m less close with the others, so I don't really feel that they had the same duty of candor). Does she think I'm such a loser that I'd go into a tailspin if I knew? (P.S., I wouldn't and didn't.) Did she really think it would be better for me to find out another way, rather than through her, my supposed friend?
I'll tell you . . . seeing her in the photos ONE DAY after she tried to act like Brian's friends ditched his wedding really chaps my hide. I can't imagine her thinking I'd be upset about her and Adam attending the reception -- I would never be like that! And the kicker?? When I found the photos, I also came across another album that showed me that during Part 2 of the Peter Pan Avoidance Tour. . . when he went to Chile, Easter Island and New Zealand for three months. . . during which time I was crying my eyes out every single day, hoping we'd get back together. . . well, it turns out that this girl -- his now-wife -- was on the Chile and Easter Island part of the trip with him. I am virtually certain that Erica knew about this and withheld that information from me (she went on a trip to Mt. Washington with them directly afterwards -- I can't imagine they didn't talk about the trip) .
All of this is now basically ancient history. I'm not upset about the PP part of the story -- though it would have been nice to have full information back when it mattered most to me. But I am upset that, once again, Erica just doesn't seem to understand the basic concept of being a good girl friend (looking back, I see that I didn't blog about a similar problem we had in the past). I'm also upset to find out now that I was basically a fool to waste those months crying over PP, since he was off having a fabulous time traveling with another girl while I was at home being miserable. I'm not planning to discuss this with Erica, at least not for the moment. Instead, I'm going to take a step back and reevaluate this friendship.

People are so damn weird sometimes. I have almost given up trying to understand some of them. It makes no sense. ARGh! I will tell you that you running into him on his way to his reception reminds me of Sex n the City when Big was marrying Natasha.
You and your mama look beautiful! I am glad you had a good time. Next time, bring your size 30 jeans and your cute face up to northern florida and we can go hunting! lol
Hi,
That would hurt my feelings...I know it would because the same thing happened to me. But for my friends, their intent was to protect my feelings. At the same time they wanted to retain a relationship with my ex which I could understand. I was upset to that they went to the wedding, partied with him and his wife, attended all their special events; while I was mourning the relationship.
In retrospect, I realized it was for the best and that my friends were trying to let me heal and not aggravate the healing but telling me about all my ex's celebrations.
But I felt all the feelings that you are...its so normal and understandable. My friends also with held the story of my ex's horrific divorce and collapse of his dysnfunctional marriage which I found out through cyberstalking LOL. When I asked them, I think their point was that my ex was my past and didn't want to bring anything painful up to me or stoke any fires. They loved me and wanted me to move on.
Sounds like you had a great trip and you look beautiful and healthy!

Oh Catherine... that is a tough one. I think that Rachel made some good points, BUT I also think that Erika needs to better understand what being a friend to you means. That is tough. I wish I knew what to say, but evaluation is never a bad thing!!! Hang in there - looks like you had a great time in FL with your Mom. Can't wait to see the pix of the jeans!!!
Wow, that sucks! I hate when I feel like people have been discussing something that involves me without my knowledge, regardless of the intention. I hope it works out for you. On a much lighter note, you and your mom look fabulous and I'm glad you had such a wonderful time!
Ugh! I hate it when people treat me like I'm strong and capable to my face and try to protect my delicate feelings secretly. It is the same as lying. You look fabulous and your mom looks great!!! I definitely like the way you guys do Thanksgiving!
You know what? I'M bitter about all of this, and I don't even know these people! You take the high road...I'll just stay here on the low road and be pissed off at everybody.
PS: your mom looks great!
I'll just offer my 2 cents. I don't think anything would be gained by confronting Erica. That being said, I do think you need to re-evaluate what your friendship actually consists of and what you want to contribute to it in the future. I'm annoyed with her just hearing about it.
P.S. You and your mom look fantastic!
I bet her issues started from when she knew about the trips so her entire view of everything regarding you and him is guilt-ridden.
And she avoids it at all because she feels like she's cheating on you.
A thought is all. I don't know.
Ack! I can't stand it when friends don't tell me something because they're protecting my feelings or somesuch. It just makes me feel like they don't know me at all if they don't feel they can tell me something they know will upset me, and then I will be upset briefly, deal with it and move on. Part of life, people!
You do look fabulously fantastically amazingly gorgeous, though. And the Delano rocks. Glad you had a great weekend.
Don't forget, you still get the satisfaction of PP's face when he saw you.
That is a weird thing-Not talking about the post break up trip is one thing. Avoiding talking about it two years later is just plain weird.
Divorce (or break-ups) are sometimes harder on our friends and family than they are for the parties involved.
for example, I can have a decent conversation with my ex husband now but my parents cannot even sit in a room with me and my 2nd husband without freaking out over the now 11 year old divorce.
I think I would talk to your friend about it but not in an accusatory way but I would give her hell (maybe in a sarcastic joking way?) about her pics and let her know that you are over the whole thing and she can tell you what is going on without a major catastrophe occurring.
I've got to say that her actions are a little suspect. Who knows what she was thinking. But I think you should talk to her about it, see where she's coming from, and if need be re-evaluate how much of a 'friend' she is.
When you figure people out, please clue me in. None of this makes much sense to me either.
I'm glad you had such a nice Thanksgiving. You and your mom are beautiful!
I am struggling to understand why Erika would withhold all that useful information... she must have been trying not to cause you more pain but doesn't seem like she knows what a strong, amazing woman you are... She's selling you short! I would re-evaluate your friendship with her but realize that she may be judging how you would react by putting herself in your place... and it sounds like he moved on before you, which probably means you are better off without him, if he can drop someone that fast... he's an emotional cripple.
I think it all boils down to loyalty, Catherine. My thoughts are if she's one of your best girlfriends she needs to be upfront with you about this kind of stuff. I mean, its almost like hanging with the enemy if you know what I mean. Sure, she's obviously their friend too, but that doesn't account for the fact she withheld information. That would upset me no end, too. She's supposed to be there for YOU.. not for PP.
Maybe she was just being polite etc about attending but don't tell me you didn't cross her mind more than once throughout the whole deal. It sucks and I feel for you, girl.
On the up side, the pic of you and your mom is just beautiful. You are two peas in a pod xxxx
I haven't read everyones comments but i have found as you get older you definitely need to re-evaluate friends. People do surprise you and as situations arise their true selves are revealed. I have no room in my life for people who do not have my best interests at heart or who don't treat me with respect.
Kudos to you for recognizing that you may need to do this! And you look fabulous!
Great Pictures Catherine!! Does your mom live in Miami?? And I would DEF re-evaluate your friendship.
Totally agree with Cara. This just sucks. I don't know, I think it would be hard not to confront Erica in some way....
The part about the size 30 jeans is excellent though! Awesome!
A definate re-evaluation is in order. I personally would rather be hurt by someone I care about being honest and upfront rather than find out myself through other means.
Amy W took the words right out of my mouth re: the sex and the city comment - what was that line Carrie said from the Barbra Streisand movie? .... gone blank
Anyways - I am glad you had a great thanksgiving with your mum - the pics are lovely :)
Ouch! And I agree - a re-evaluation is in order. I have friends who STILL act that way and my ex and I have been split for 15+ years. I don't get it. It's like "leave things alone - it's in the past" but at the same time you wonder what they think of you if they continue to feel this "need" to "protect" you from whatever it is that the ex is doing. Makes NO sense whatsoever.
At least he saw you looking hot. That alone is worth it's weight in gold. ;)
WOW that is tough :-( All of it. All I can say is you are entitled to your feelings about this situation you are not off base that just seems wrong. I would maybe preface it with...do you want to know? So at least if you say no I would feel like I wasnt keeping something from you. I would ask her why. I just would need to hear it from her mouth. The other folks you kinda got from him so they may get a pass...
i think erica was stuck between a rock and a hard place. so she did what benefited her. figuring neither you nor pp could get mad at her for just not saying anything. she hasn't got what it takes to be a good friend to someone else.
Re-evaluate baby!
Love the pics!
Isn't it interesting the decisions our "friends" make? Not to worry, Mr. Wonderful is just waiting for you, I just know it! You and your mom look beautiful!
You're right to re-evaluate the friendship with Erica-- I would feel as betrayed as you are describing. It sounds like you have a bunch of lovely OTHER friends in your life.
I would not be dramatic about it-- I would just spend less time with the people who systematically deceived me (if I were you.) With friends like that... you know the drill.
Sorry-- I can feel the feeling of my own heart pounding during such a cyber discovery session that you described where you saw the pictures...
Love the pictures, but the rest kind of sucks. I'm so happy that PP got to see you looking so hot.
