Worried

I wasn't sure if I was going to post about this, but it's a big deal to me and I wanted you to know it was going on. When I was coming back from Austin on Monday, I noticed that I had two missed calls from my mom (not unusual -- we talk nearly every day) -- and two urgent "Please call me ASAP. Need to get in touch with you" texts from my brother. I called him immediately. It turns out that my mother had some heart problems (we thought heart attack, but it's not 100% clear if that's what it was) on Sunday night and was in the hospital. Actually, she is still there and will be for two more days.

By all accounts, my mom will be fine, but this is really upsetting to me. My mom and I are really close. Some of you will remember that she actually came to Mexico with me for my band surgery and slept on a sofa bed in my hospital room the night of my surgery so that I wouldn't be alone and she could be there if I needed anything. She's the kind of mom who would literally give me the shirt off of her back if I needed it (fortunately, these days, there is a chance it might fit..), and who has been one of my biggest and most constant supporters in life in general, and certainly through this process. So, the thought of anything happening to her is just extremely upsetting to me, and I'm so glad that she seems to be OK and receiving good care.

With my mom on our trip to New Mexico over Labor Day Weekend

My mom reads so many of your blogs (she especially loves Roo, Sarah, The New Me, Cara, Amy and Angie) and posts once in a while as "Kathy." I know that she follows a lot of bandster blogs (without being a signed-up follower) and is always happy to see how well everyone is doing. So, please keep her in your thoughts right now and send her your prayers, best wishes, good vibes, etc. for a speedy recovery. It can't hurt, and it's bound to help at least a little. :)

*hugs* Our relationships with our moms are complicated and wonderful, and I can't even imagine how worried you must be about your mom right now. I hope that the next few days bring you promising news and that she's home and on the mend soon!

Kathy, while you're recuperating, go read my blog so I get to be on your list of favourites! I'm a hoot! And I spell things the crazy Canadian way!

Sending good thoughts to you and your family! My Dad had a heart attack at 48 (he's now 63). You're right to be encouraged that she's getting good care. They can do so much for heart disease. I hope she continues to improve quickly!!

Sending hugs and thoughts to you and your mum....hopefully she will be back on her feet soon. It's always scary when you hear news of loved ones getting sick etc and even harder when there is distance between you. I quite often get teary because someone at home is unwell and I cannot be there (one of the reasons I am heading home in the next few months!). I had no idea that your mum followed my blog...I am glad she enjoys it and can follow our journeys too....I tell my mum about all the blogs I read and the girls that are ispiration, including you!

Sending you and your mom love!! Its so scary when things like this happen. At least in the hospital they can monitor her. Sometimes we forget to take care of ourselves because we are busy taking care of others. I hope mom is released soon and can get back to normal.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery for mom! Sounds like she will be fine.

A small PSA:

Heart problems are usually only a concern to men, but they are a HUGE silent danger to women...and many of us don't know it, and our doctor's don't test us!

Sorry to hear about your Mom - I just prayed for her.

I'm a medical assistant and I've worked for a cardiologist for the last 2 years and I've learned A LOT about heart disease. The great majority of the time with proper treatment and long-term follow-up people live a long happy life! If you need any help deciphering medical "talk" let me know! :)

Thanks so much, everyone! I am going to Florida in the morning to be with my mom. She is going to have two procedures done (not open heart, thankfully).

I really appreciate all of your thoughts, prayers and nice messages and I know my mom will too. In fact, I'm printing out all of them to take to the hospital so that she can read them there. I know it will make her feel good to see that so many of you are thinking of her. :) I know it really did that for me.

xoxoxo,
Catherine
